Description of Activity
This workshop focuses on improving the quality of interpreting for Deaf/HH students with emerging or minimal language. The target audience include educational interpreters who are studying or are currently working in the educational setting. Topics include: language deprivation, language access, literacy, math, teamwork and much more. The workshop will also include large and small group discussions as well as hands up time. Interpreters will practice interpreting children’s stories or lessons and create modifications depending on the language level of the student.
Educational Objectives
Students will be responsible for developing 3-5 modifications for interpreting a short children’s story. Depending on the language level of their student, they will be required to be creative using gestures, expansion and specific classifiers to describe the story. The other participants in the group will provide feedback to their teammates to better improve their overall interpretation. The workshop will also include whole group discussions where participants will discuss interpreting strategies when working with emerging language users.
Evaluation & Assessment
At the beginning of the workshop there will be hands up practice interpreting a story or a lesson. After applying the strategies acquired from the workshop, participants will then redo their interpretation. A group discussion will follow where an evaluation and constructive feedback is given.
Presenter Biography: Lindsey Bomba-Holcomb, “Bomba”, is an Educational Interpreter with almost 20 years’ experience working within the educational setting. She received her bachelor's degree in 2005 from ODU and her state interpreter certification in 2008. Later, in 2011, Bomba went on to further her education and received her National Interpreter Certification. She is currently pursuing her Master’s degree in Deaf Education from Radford University. She has experience working with students in all settings ranging from early childhood to college. Bomba’s true passion lies in working with language deprived students and emergent language learners. Recently, her and her husband Josh added two lovely additions to their family - a 2 year old girl named Charlotte and her baby brother, Lincoln. In her spare time you will find her coaching, antiquing and even teaching incarcerated youth. She is excited to have the opportunity to share what she has learned over the years with all educators who work with Deaf and HH students.
