Workshop Information: 

In this workshop we will be discussing ASL grammar, focusing on various topics such as topic/comment structure, verb tenses, and passive vs. active voice, direct and indirect discourse (IE. Role shifting,) etc.  Participants will have the opportunity to translate a variety of texts from English into ASL.  We will also work on several interpretations and discuss different strategies for interpretations. This workshop will be conducted in ASL

Presenter Biography: Paula Reece, CI/CT

Paula Debes Reece is originally from New York City and she started her teaching career at the Lexington School for the Deaf.  She has also taught science to Deaf students at The Learning Center and at Woodson HS.  She currently is the Assistant Dean for the ASL and Interpreter Education Department at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale campus and has taught there since 2004.  She holds a MA degree in Deaf Education from McDaniel’s College and an M. Ed in Higher Education with a specialization in teaching Interpreting from Northeastern University.    In addition, she maintains her CI/CT certification from the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf and Professional Level Certification from the American Sign Language Teacher’s Association.
