Workshop Description: Interpreters often have opportunities to voice for deaf adults and much practice and preparation are focused on this area. We must give a voice to varying ages of students in an organic, unbiased, and…frankly, a non-weird-sounding way. While working toward this balance can be a bit unsettling and intimidating, for fear of sounding too forced or too silly, we are aware that students talk and sound from adults. But how, as adults, can we make that happen? The interpreter charged with voicing for deaf students has a huge effect on the teacher-student dynamic and all stakeholders involved: the hearing teacher, hearing students, and the deaf students. This dynamic is not only shared in the classroom, but throughout every setting in which the student participates. Generally speaking, what kid wants to be friends with another kid if she sounds like a 30 year old third grader? (…awkward!) If the interpreter voices the student’s comment and all attention is turned to the interpreter, then the target has been missed. This workshop will explain how to hit the mark, every time, so the appropriate attention is given to the statement made by the deaf student. Additionally, participants will learn how to voice for more than one deaf student and still make it clear who is talking. This presentation is very interactive and participation is a must…voicing is not a spectator sport! Time will be given to work in small groups for “voice-on” preparation and methods practice.
