Workshop Description:

This workshop has a focus on ASL non-manual signals (NMS) and their linguistic functions. Advance your knowledge about NMS and develop your skills with practice activities.

This workshop will cover 12 linguistic functions of Non-Manual Signals:

1)Non-Manual Adverbs 2) Adjectives 3) Lexical Non-Manual Behaviors 4) Non-Manual Grammatical Markers 5) Emotional States/ Evaluative judgments 6) Prosodic Structure 7) Discourse Structure 8) Turn Taking 9) Backchannel Feedback 10) Grammatical "Sound" Markers 11) Mouth Movements, and 12) Silent ASL.

Educational Objectives:

Participants will be able to:

· identify lexical Non-Manual Signals

· discuss morphological functions of NMS

· apply knowledge of lexical Non-Manual Signals in webinar practice activities

Materials:

· Power Point Presentation with Graphic Art Clips, Open and Closed Captioning

· Hands On practice

· E handouts

Evaluation & Assessment:

The instructor will provide opportunities for questions throughout the activity. This will contribute to gauging progress. The instructor will observe individuals’ participation and engagement in activities to determine progress in participants’ new and expanded target skills.
