Workshop Description:

Interpreters are often working hard to keep up with their English speakers so when we hear English utterances, our brains automatically come up with the ASL equivalents for the words that we hear. This is what we do, right?? But this can get in the way of visualizing entire concepts and using depictions and classifiers to describe what you are hearing. This skill requires continued practice. We will discuss the types of depictions/ classifiers and the ongoing discussions of these terms by linguists and ASL teachers. We will analyze several clips of ASL users demonstrating depictions/ classifiers and constructed action. Finally, we will discuss strategies to incorporate more depiction into your interpreting work to further enhance your visual description in ASL.

Presenter Biographies: Paula Debes Reece, MA, CI/CT

Paula Debes Reece is originally from New York City and she started her teaching career at the Lexington School for the Deaf. She has also taught science to Deaf students at The Learning Center and at Woodson HS. She currently is the Assistant Dean for the ASL and Interpreter Education Department at Northern Virginia Community College, Annandale campus and has taught there since 2004. She holds a MA degree in Deaf Education from McDaniel’s College and an M. Ed in Higher Education with a specialization in teaching Interpreting from Northeastern University. In addition, she maintains her CI/CT certification from the Registry of Interpreters of the Deaf and Professional Level Certification from the American Sign Language Teacher’s Association.
